The Valley of Mines is split between three factions, and your choice shapes your story, your trainers, and which build is easiest to pursue. You can only join one — it's permanent, so choose by the playstyle you want.

Old Camp — Strength & Fire Magic (best for beginners)

The most accessible faction, with the easiest admission quest. Great for melee, ranged and fire-mage builds. Key trainers:

  • Scatty — One-Handed weapons
  • Diego — Strength and Dexterity
  • Torrez — Rune Magic, Mana, and magical supplies

Pick the Old Camp if you want a smooth on-ramp into the game.

New Camp — Dexterity & Water Magic

Built for agility, archery and mobility. The New Camp leans into Dexterity builds and Water Magic (especially Ice spells) for crowd control. Choose it if you like kiting enemies with a bow and hit-and-run combat.

Swamp Camp (the Sect) — Magic & Hybrid Builds

The mystical faction. Join the Brotherhood and work toward becoming a Templar; you gain rune-magic training as soon as you join, plus unique Sleeper runes and early two-handed training. The top pick for battlemage / melee-magic hybrids and lore fans.

Tip: there's no single "correct" camp — explore all three and talk to key NPCs before you commit, because the choice is locked for the rest of the run.

FAQ

How many camps are there in Gothic 1 Remake?
Three: the Old Camp, the New Camp, and the Swamp Camp (the Sect). Each has its own playstyle, trainers and exclusive gear.
Which camp is best for beginners?
The Old Camp. It has the easiest admission quest and supports straightforward melee, ranged and fire-mage builds with accessible trainers.
Can I join more than one camp?
No. Picking a faction is a permanent decision that locks you out of the other camps' exclusive armor sets, magic and high-tier guild quests.
Which camp is best for a mage?
The Swamp Camp for a battlemage/hybrid, or the Old Camp for fire magic. The New Camp specialises in water and ice magic.
